On June 17, 2009, Pita Aatami was made "Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Québec" for helping the well-being and advancement of people in Nunavik. An excerpt from Premier Jean Charest's presentation speech follows.
Allocution du premier ministre du Québec, M. Jean Charest, prononcée à la salle du Conseil législatif de l’hôtel du Parlement, le 17 juin 2009, à la remise de l'insigne de chevalier à M. Pita Aatami:
"Vous avez joué un rôle de premier plan dans la transition des Inuits du Nunavik vers une autonomie gouvernementale.
En 2007, ici même à l’Assemblée nationale, vous avez signé au nom de
votre nation un document par lequel les gouvernements du Québec et du
Canada donnaient le feu vert à l’instauration d’un gouvernement
régional pour le Nunavik."
